Teaching Statement

I believe that art students have a creative drive that pushes them to constantly delve into the conceptual aspects of their work. The main thing they need from an instructor is the technical ability to be able to bring their concepts to life. In life drawing students learn the basics of anatomy, proportion, mass, line quality, value and composition as it pertains to the human form. Advanced students, having studied these aspects, can then branch out into what they want to say with the information they are assimilating. They begin to further work out issues of composition and concept, and are introduced to color and new media. In learning the technical aspects of their craft, students are given the tools necessary to bring their ideas to life. I feel it is my job to make sure they are able to make their choices about the work out of a certain mastery of skill, and never out of ignorance.
