What is MILO?

MILO stands for Mesa Independent Learning Option. This program emphasizes students learning independently of a traditional class.

*WHY?

The program is designed for students who don't need class room lectures, discussions or tests and can work on their own without day by day assignments. MILO students tend to work through a syllabus faster than a class can as a whole.

*WHO takes MILO Courses?

  • Students who need humanities or literature credits
  • Students who work full time and would like to work from home
  • Student parents who need flexible schedules to work around family
  • Teachers who need to recertify-quickly!
  • Students enrolled at one campus who want to take another course without driving
  • University students who need "one more class" and certain values to graduate or complete major requirements.
  • People who love to read anyway and need elective credits.
  • English, English Education, Humanities, or Women Studies majors.
  • Students who need to complete a course quickly to meet some requirement.

The primary criterion is that the student must be able to work independently of a traditional class.

*HOW do students enroll?

Interested students must obtain an Override to enroll in a MILO course. You may obtain an OVERRIDE from me at the Red Mountain campus (or from Prof. Eberle, the English Department Chair at Southern and Dobson.) You may call or email me to obtain the override.

*WHEN can I start?

Students may enroll at any time, year round and may finish as quickly as they wish -- but within 12-15 weeks. Students work at home with no lectures, no exams, and at their own pace. Students write personal responses to the readings and mail them to me; I then provide individual feedback on each assignment. The final project in each course is a ten-page research paper. Click here to see topics to choose from.

*WHERE do I go for class?

All work is completed at home and may be submitted using email.

MILO courses transfer to ASU, NAU, U of A and other institutions with which we have articulation/transfer agreements.

Summary:

MILO courses are self-paced. Students may enroll any time and finish as quickly as they like. Students must complete periodic journals and a 10 page research paper. There are no class meetings but students converse regularly with the professor via email.
