Internet Explorer -Outlook Express Setup DirectionsIt is best that you print this page and have it beside you as your configure your mail program.
All students who are using the Windows operating system (98 or later) already have Microsoft's Internet Explorer on their computer, and with it, Explorer's mail and bulletin board software, Outlook Express. It is important that you are running the latest version of this software to get all the features of this mail system, Internet Explorer 6.0. If you do not have it, you should download and install it before setting up this software to use your MCC mail account. To do this, go to Microsoft's download page and follow the directions for downloading and installing this software to your computer: Microsoft's Download.
Outlook Express will work well with both the MCC mail system, and with the Collabra Bulletin board that this course uses, and if your Internet provider already uses this mail, you do not need to change any of the original settings to your Internet Provider's mail or news groups to use it. Both your provider's mail, and your new MCC mail account, will work from the same mail page with just a few settings to add your MCC mail show Outlook where to get your mail. If your Internet provider uses some other mail software, you can still use Outlook Express for this course.
First, you must already have created your MCC mail account before you set up the Outlook software. If you have not already completed this task, go to the MCC Mail Creation page and do it now.
Once this mail account has been created, launch your Outlook Express. You can do this in two ways: (1) Launch Internet Explorer and click on the Mail tab on the Menu bar. A menu will appear -- choose Read Mail and Outlook will launch,* or (2) when IE is installed, it normally puts an icon on your desktop for you to select to open your mail. Of course, you should be connected to the Internet when you do this.
* It is possible that some other mail program has made itself the default mail. In this case, Outlook Express will not launch using this the mail tab in IE until you make it the default. To do this, go to Tools on the main menu bar of IE and select Internet Options.
From this menu, choose Programs. In this window, you can switch your mail default program to Outlook Express by clicking on the check mark next to E-Mail and choosing the proper program. Now Outlook Express will be able to be opened from your Internet Explorer browser.
When you have Outlook Express launched, choose Tools from that menu bar. Select Accounts from the menu that appears. Select the Mail tab on the menu bar. The Account menu below shows an original ISP provider (Mail) and two MCC mail account. Yours will probably only show your ISP's account (if your ISP uses Outlook Express) when you first access it. Select the select Mail tab (Note: do not write over your ISP's mail account -- you want to create a second account). Then select the Add button. A wizard will start that will lead your through the steps to set up access to your MCC mail.
Put your full name in the first blank. This is the name that will appear on your mail and bulletin board assignments. For this class, it must be your first and last name -- no nicknames. Then choose Next at the bottom of the screen.
Select I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use from the next screen and type in your MCC e-mail address. This address will be your the username you chose when you set up your account, followed by and @mail.mc.maricopa.edu, as you see below.
Select Next and a new screen will appear for you to input your servers (the computers that send and receive your mail). The first is the server that receives and stores your mail. The MCC server is an IMAP server, so select IMAP and then type imap.mc.maricopa.edu so your mail program can contact that server to receive your mail. In the SMTP server space (the one that sends your mail) type in your ISP's SMTP server name. You can get this server name by going to your ISP's account and looking at its SMTP server setting.
Select Next and your last screen will appear for you to set up your login to your MCC account. Type in your MCC mail username in the Account name area, and if you wish the program to automatically submit your MCC email password, type that in the Password area and check Remember password. Select Next and you will get the Finish screen. When you close this out, you should see an account listed below your ISP's mail account in the left hand column of your mail window. The software program should now ask you if you wish to download the folders from this account. Say Yes. If it doesn't ask, select the new mail's server name in the left column of your mail window, and select IMAP Folders in the right window.
Now you can choose to have your email program download messages from both accounts or just one account by using your Send/Receive command.
You are now ready to use your MCC mail.
