THE TASK: This assignment is in three parts. In Part 1 you will discuss The Dark Wind as a piece of literature. Part 2 requires you to create your title page and works consulted page for your first research paper.   Part 3 asks you to work on researching your subject and creating the note cards for the paper (these note cards must be in correct form and be submitted with the final paper).

Assignment Summary:

To write a 500 word (minimum) analytical essay on The Dark Wind, using your word processor, and copy & paste it to the class bulletin board (30 points).
To identify 10-15 sources for your research question and build a title page and bibliography. This assignment will not be turned in until Assignment 8 is complete.
To begin gathering material for your first research paper.

Assignment 7-Part 1

Using your word processor, write an analytical essay on The Dark Wind by Tony Hillerman (500 words minimum) and then paste it into your class bulletin board (BB#4-Dark Wind Analysis). This entry is a critical analysis of The Dark Wind. You should consider the following elements:

bulletTony Hillerman as a writer.
bulletThe mystery plot
bulletThe use of local color
bulletThe Indian Culture
bulletEtc.

If you are at home and do not have PowerPoint on your computer or have not installed the PowerPt. viewer from the MCC Download page, you must do this before you can watch this lecture.

Concentrate your writing skills on essay structure, style and personality in writing. You should write this entry in your word processor to use its full editing capabilities, then upload the file to your class bulletin board. Remember that when you give opinions, as you do in analytical writing, you must support these opinions with specific examples from the book and with supporting detail. Read the other students' opinions on the bulletin board, and feel free to respond and debate or support for class forum points.

Log in to the class bulletin board and enter this analysis with subject as   "Your Name's" Dark Wind Analysis. Points: 30

**Using your word processor, develop a Title & Work Consulted page for your first research essay.

Remember that this assignment must be graded and returned before you can hand in your final paper for this unit. If this assignment does not meet this requirement, no credit will be given.  This assignment will be combined with Assignment 8 and handed in at that time. Do not submit at this time.

Assignments with two asterisks (**) must be completed, graded by the instructor, and returned before you can hand in your final paper for each unit. This allows you to see the mistakes being made on MLA forms and essay structure before writing the final paper. If this criteria is not met, no credit will be given for the asterisks (**) assignment.

Assignment 7-Part 3

Work on note cards for research paper.
