Now that you have practiced with the technology and have completed some reading into your topic, you are ready to finish the research on your topic and write your first paper. This first research essay should be from four (4) to six (6) pages in length, excluding the title page and work consulted page. The final product will be submitted to your instructor in MLA format. Be sure to study the sample paper provided (see lectures).

The subject of this first research paper will be suggested by The Dark Wind and is limited to an Arizona subject.

This final paper will include the following:

1. MLA formatted Formal Title page, Content area, and Works Consulted page.
2. Parenthetical (in text) documentation as necessary.
3. A long and a short quote.
4. Page numbers on document.

Assignment #6
The Topic

THE TASK: This assignment is divided into two parts.  Part 1 asks you to to form a research question for your first paper from the list you made while reading The Dark Wind and  to post your research question on the class bulletin board for the class to read and comment. These comments on your topic will earn extra credit for your classmates (class forum points), and hopefully these comments will help you narrow your subject for research. Part 2 requires you to finish your search for sources for your first paper.

Assignment Summary:

  1. You will post your research question onto the bulletin board for the rest of the class to read (10 points).
  2. You will begin searching for sources for your documented essay.

Assignment 6:

A. Log on the class bulletin board, choose BB3-1st Research Question and in the subject box enter "your Name's" research question:  i.e. Bradshaw's Research Question.  In the text box, write your research question - followed by an explanation of this question as outlined below (write this in your word processor and copy and paste it or write it directly into the board).

The first line of this essay entry should start with "Research Question:" Example:

Research Question: What does the coyote mean in Navajo culture?

Underneath this first line, this expository entry should explain:

bulletYour subject and why it interests you (remember that for minimum credit, the
posting must be at least 300 words). Your subject may be fairly broad at this
point. You will be expected to narrow it as you read on the subject. Remember
that the paper must have an Arizona subject.
bulletHow you arrived at this subject from The Dark Wind.
bulletAnything that you already know about the subject.

Read the other research questions and respond if you have opinions about or help for any of these subjects (Class Forum Extra Credit Points). Points: 10  .

Assignment 6-Part 2: This part of Ass. 6 will not be submitted until you turn in Ass. 8.

B. Finish searching for sources for your first paper.

bulletThis paper should have at least 10-15 sources.
bulletYou can consider a book with quite a bit of information as an equivalent to 3
periodical sources in this first paper only.
bulletYou may use only one general encyclopedia reference.
bulletRemember that this must be original research completed for this class.  Do not use a paper that you have written in the past - either in high school or college.
