THE TASK: This assignment is divided into two parts.  Part 1 will teach you how to use your word processor to build a bibliography. The MLA forms for building your bibliography are on-line in a file called MLA STYLE (a link to MLASTYLE is aways on your toolbar at the top of each assignment page). Part 2 will continue to help you learn in text (parenthetical) documentation, and to learn about plagiarism.

Assignment Summary:

An exercise called Practice Bibliography completed in your word processor. This exercise will teach you to format a Works Cited document (with a title page) using correct MLA form.

To complete a plagiarism exercise, add it to  Assignment 3's title page and bibliography exercise and submit it by e-mail attachment (30 points for the title page and Works Cited page - 20 pts for the plagiarism exercise).

Assignment 3-Part 1:

Lectures -- Required reading

  1. Building a Works Cited Page
  2. What to call a bibliography
  3. MLA STYLE
  4. Sample Title Page
  5. Sample Bibliography Page

Using Microsoft Word, access the exercise titled Practice Bibliography by clicking on the blue hyperlink below to bring the document to the screen. Read the instructions on the exercise. You may want to print this document and have it visible in hard copy as you use your word processor.

Practice Bibliography

1.  Build a bibliography page from the samples, using correct MLA format. The instructions for formatting a Works Cited page are in the Microsoft Word lecture (see Ass. 2).  Also, a document that has different types of entry samples, MLA STYLE, is available and should be viewed and/or printed. You also should view the sample bibliography page.  This sample is how your finished product should be formatted.

2.  Type a title page for the assignment (see the sample title page in the sample paper provided). The instructions for making a title page are in the "Microsoft Word for English Students."

When you finish this part, you should have saved to disk one document that consists of a title page (first), followed by a Works Cited page.

This part of assignment 3 should be completed and held until you complete the plagiarism exercise. You will submit this exercise (title page and bibliography) when you have placed the plagiarism exercise (Ass. 3-Part 2) between the title page and the practice bibliography page . Do not submit at this time. Save your completed document to your hard drive or disk. Points: 30

After the instructor's name, you should put a page break (a word processor command that forces any text after the page break to the top of the next page).  This will assure you that even if the instructor adds comments to the title page 9which will add lines to the page), the body of the paper will start at the top of a new page

To add a page break in MS Word, go to the Menu bar and choose Insert.  When that menu opens, choose Page Break.  This command will not show on your page, but will force any text below it to a new page.  Be sure to have your cursor right after the last text you want to appear on the title page when you choose this command.

You should also use the Page Break after the last word of text in the body of your paper.  That will automatically force the Works Cited page to the top of a new page, no matter what comments are added to your paper by the instructor.
