THE TASK: This assignment is in two parts. Part 1 will help you learn to search the library and the Internet for references on a subject. Part 2 asks you to post your observations of your library orientation (from Ass. 2) on the bulletin board, and to respond to your classmates observations. At this point, you should also be reading The Dark Wind and thinking of possible subjects relating to this book to write your first research essay.
Assignment Summary:
A tour of the MCC library on line resources, a tour of a library of your choice (which can be the MCC library or another library of your choice), and practice in using the e-resources, on-line search engines, and the Internet.
To write an essay (500 words minimum) on your library research orientation and post it on your instructional web bulletin board. (20 points).
Lectures -- Required reading
Assignment 2-Part 1:
Orientation to the MCC Library, to the library of your choice, and to research by Internet:
1. Go to the library where you plan to complete most of your research and orient yourself to it. This could be the MCC library, or a public library that you like to use. Look specifically for the indexes and how to use them, where the periodicals and reference books are, how extensive their collections are, how technologically advanced their searches and online information are, etc.

In this Assignment 2, you will write a short essay (approximately five hundred words or more) describing the library you chose, and evaluating its collections, technology and use to you in your research. This essay will also comment on the tools found in the MCC library and on the Internet. Take notes of both what you see and do in your library tour and what you find in the research orientation for material for this Assignment 2 essay.
Assignment 2-Part 2:
Library Orientation bulletin board entry:
Write an original essay (500 words minimum):
1. Describe the MCC Library or the library you chose to visit
a. Evaluate its collections, technology and usefulness to you in your research
3. Comment on the orientation in Assignment 2:
a. include an evaluation of the Online Databases, the Internet as a research source, and all of the research and writing tools available to you (such as the search engines, Dogpile, Writing Resources, the Digital Library, etc).
b. include an evaluation of the Ass. 2 orientation, i.e. comments on whether it helped introduce resources to you, whether the library videos were helpful, what search engines you liked, etc.
Format this entry single spaced with an extra space between paragraphs -- this will make your entry easier to read and will substitute for the indent for each paragraph (the bulletin board will not format a normal indent for a paragraph). You may write this entry directly into the bulletin board, but a better way is to write it in Microsoft Word and paste it into the board - but remember if you paste it from MS Word, some formatting will be lost, so be sure to proof your entry after you post it. You can use the Edit button at the bottom of your entry to bring it back up in the editor.

*The bulletin board is a place to inform the other students in the class of your problems using the technology, and of the research that you are doing. These bulletin board entries are regular assignments to practice your writing skills and take the place of the extra writing assignments in a regular English 102 class. Therefore, you should always put your best writing effort in to these assignments. The minimum words for each assigned entry is 300 for credit (C), but spelling and other mechanics also can affect your grade. Most well-developed assignments run 400-500 words or longer. (A & B) grades will be given to those writings that show depth of thought and development of the assignment. (See Grading of Papers and Bulletin Board Assignments in your syllabus). Replies to other student entries can vary in length.
