Assignment 4: Part 1
| By now you should have finished The Dark Wind by Tony Hillerman. You should have a list of possible subjects that you found in the book that interested you (see PowerPoint lecture). From this list, you will choose the subject for your first research paper. Do not be too concerned now with narrowing the subject, nor will you be "locked in" to this subject if you wish to change later. The subject that you choose for this first paper is limited to Arizona -- so if you choose a subject like "prison crowding," your subject would have to be on the Arizona prisons. |
Using the indexes from the library of your choice, and the ones that can be accessed from home (the main library terminal, InfoTrac, and Internet), find three different type of sources on a specific subject from The Dark Wind. ("Different type" means books, periodicals, academic journals, SIRS, Internet, etc. The point of finding different types of sources is to recognize and use different MLA documentation forms. Do the best you can with the different sources). Try the IAC from the MCC library terminal screen (on the toolbar to the left of this assignment) and try some of the search engines on the Internet (see second paragraph below).
You can also find databases on the Internet. Use the search engines GOOGLE, WEBCRAWLER, YAHOO, LYCOS, ALTA VISTA and to find subjects and articles. These can be accessed by clicking on the blue links, and are always available to you on browser's toolbar, by selecting Search. You can save any document you find to a disk or to your hard drive, or you can print them.
If you find an article on the Internet, you will have to build a bibliography entry that gives the primary source of the article (provided at the beginning of the article) and the secondary source. See the MLA STYLE for more information and an example Internet entry.
You will also find meta search engines on the Internet. These engines access many of the best Internet search engines for you and compile the results. Dogpile and One2Seek below accesses over 45 search engines. Try the ones below:
Assignment 4-5: Part 2
Use Microsoft Word to type this assignment. This assignment will have a title page, note pages, and a Works Cited page.
Using three sources for your note material, write two brief (brief = one to two sentences) examples of each of the following types of notes:
Remember that the notes you take in this assignment will be used to write your first research paper!
1. Type Quote as a header and type two different quotes. Direct Quotes
Start each note in the following manner:
According to <Name of author> in an article in <name of magazine or book> "write the quote." Be sure to use parenthetical documentation at the end of the quote.
Example: John Smith, in an article in Time, states, "xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxxx xxxxxx" (24). Note: , (comma) or : (colon) usually introduce quotes (: is reserved for longer quotes)
2. Type Paraphrase as the next header: Paraphrases
Type two paraphrases in the following manner:
a. Type Original Material: and type in the material that you plan to paraphrase. Write the exact words from the article, using quote marks. Be sure to document it. Important: If your original material is longer than four typed lines (12 point type), use the long quote form to display the text.
b. Type My Paraphrase under this material and type your paraphrase.
<Name of Author> in <name of article or name of book/magazine> points out that <write your paraphrase>. Note: the word "that" introduces paraphrases and summaries.
Example: John Smith, in Navajo land, states that xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxx xxxx xxxxx xxxxx (24).
3. Type Summary as a header and type two summaries. Summaries
Example: John Smith also points out that xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx (24).
4. Type Combination as a header: Combinations
Type two Combination notes in the following manner:
a. Type Original Material: and type in the material that you plan to use as a combination.
b. Type My Combination under this material and type your Combination note.
(Use examples from above)
Do not forget to include the original material on the Paraphrase and Combination notes. Your notes should be longer than the examples. Type a Work Consulted page to go at the end of the notes.
Using your word processor, type your notes. Be sure to double space your manuscript. Put page numbers on your document in correct MLA format.
