Where I've Been
I was born in Urbana, Illinois, but grew up in Sacramento California.
That's really home for me. I don't get back there much, but look forward
to any opportunity to do so. After spending two years at American River
Community College, I went away to complete a bachelor's degree in Utah.
I met my wife while completing my undergraduate degree and we were married
in 1990. After a couple of years, we found our way to Arcata, CA, which
is famous for it's college, it's welfare system and an abundance of
good marijuana ( of course, I would know nothing about this last distinction).
From there, we moved to Utah were I completed my doctoral studies at
Utah State University and subsequently became heavily immersed in teaching
and research.
And now, I'm at Mesa Community College teaching psychology. Got here in 2002. This
has been a wonderful move for my family. I'm looking forward
to many more fulfilling and productive years with the college.
Experience
Before coming to Mesa Community College, I served as an adjunct instructor for the Psychology Departments at Utah State University and Weber State University. I've taught a little bit of everything--motivation and emotion, cognition, instruction, principles of learning, introductory psychology, research methods, statistics and social psychology, just to name a few. My current list of classes includes Introductory Psychology, Educational Psychology, Introductory Statistics and Tests and Measurements. I also advise for Service Learning students.
Within the field of applied psychology, I have installed a department-wide evaluation program that is ongoing. Additionally, I have taken a lead in the development
of various psychometric tests, including cognitive styles tests.
I have served as a consultant for the Cache Valley
School District--primarily in the capacity of managing the development
of web-based courses designed to provide instruction for adult,
high school students. Finally, I have served as Coordinator
of National Field Studies for Van Dusen Consulting and as an Evaluation
Consultant for the Western Institute for Research and Evaluation.
To these varying ends, I have directed the marketing, conceptualization and direction of research activities on
both local and national scales.
Last year, I served as Department Chair. Currently, I devote most of my time to teaching (in all of its
facets) and supporting various departmental and college-wide projects. These responsibilities aside, I do manage to maintain my professional, creative edge in other ways, such as developing PowerPoint slides for a texbook published by Prentice-Hall.
