Finals

Organism or Research Project:

You will be working on an organism or research project throughout the semester.  This can take the form of a traditional write-up, a poster, a web site, a photographic assignment, producing a short video or PowerPoint presentation, the choice is yours.  You will be assigned an organism, but you can design your own research project.  Be smart, design a research project that relates to your interests, talents, passions, or hobbies.  This is a chance for you to express yourself.

Grading:

Online knowledge checks: 125

Quiz: 50

Exam 1: 125

Exam 2: 175

Final: 275

Organism or Research Project: 150

Lab Reports: 100

Extra Credit: 50

E-mail and the Internet:

You must have your MCC e-mail account activated by the first week of class as e-mail and a variety of web-based resources will be used throughout the semester.

Examinations:

Online Knowledge Check: There will be frequent online knowledge checks.

Quiz & Exams 1&2: These will be a combination of multiple choice and short or single word answer with progressively fewer multiple choice questions on successive exams.

Final exam: Some questions will be long answer, essay style, and some questions will be similar in style to the quiz and exam questions.  Essay style questions will be broad in scope and are designed to make you tie together different aspects of biology.  Think about how these different aspects are related, connected, and fit into the "big picture".   N.B. I will not give make-up exams, if you miss the exam, you forfeit the points.  Under certain circumstances, special arrangements can be made to take exams at the campus testing center.

A recipe for success:

Come to every class & actively participate.  If you do not understand anything, please ask for help, either in class, during office hours, or in review sessions.  Never stop seeking assistance until you are comfortable you have a complete understanding of the topic.  Review notes, (the codeword is evolution) the readings and CD at least weekly and begin serious study for your exams a week before the test date.

Assistance & Tutoring:

If you require tutoring in any area (e.g., writing skills), please let me know so I can point you in the right direction.

Disabilities:

Students with physical or learning disabilities should contact me the first class session to discuss your needs.  Reasonable accommodations will be made for any eligible disability.  Contact Disability Resources & Services: (461-7447) to obtain an instructors letter if you have not already done so.

Student code of conduct:

Please refer to the student code of conduct.  Willingly tampering with equipment or altering computer settings, disruptive behavior, or academic dishonesty are in violation of the student code of conduct and will be handled according in current MCC policy.

Withdrawal Policy & Attendance:

I will take attendance each class session.  Attendance is required at all class sessions.  If you are unable to attend a class for a justifiable reason, please inform me before the missed class.  In the result of a medical emergency or you have to miss class for a medical reason, I will require a signed doctors note with phone number of the doctors office.  More than two unexplained absences from class may result in you being withdrawn.  Withdrawals will be in accordance with current MCC policy.
