CIS105 - Survey of Computer Information Systems

If I Had Only Known....

Advice from Deb Fells' CIS105 Students

To know the road ahead, ask those coming back. - Chinese proverb

When students took the final test in CIS 105, I posed this question to them:

teamWhat advice would you give to new CIS 105 students on this course? (In other words, what do you wish someone had told you about on your first day?

A representative sample of their responses are shown below.

lightkey Don't procrastinate on completing assignments. Also, if you don't understand, ask. Deb was helpful in answering questions and concerns in a timely manner. Have a good attitude about learning. You may not like everything you learn, but you will get through it and move on to something you may like.
lightkey Always be in class and on-time, keep up on assignments, and ask for help right away when you feel lost or behind on assignments. Thanks you Ms. Fells for doing an awesome job in teaching our class. You were always patient with the students. I really did learn a great deal in your class.
lightkey There's a lot of work involved. Once you start this class, make sure you do all the assignments. Make sure you never miss a test day. Make sure that you always do what you need to do.  Read all the chapters.
lightkey A very fun class, and I learned many things that I did not kno w before.
lightkey As far as introductory classes go, this class was excellent! You will learn much more than you really need to know to be knowledgeable in all the modules we worked with.
lightkey Go to class and keep up on your readings. I enjoyed my instructor who made each section we studied easy to understand; the instructor has great knowledge and I have learned more from her than anyone else. Also the different projects we did were helpful to understanding each section we studied. Ms. Fells, thank you so much for your help, you were both informative and entertaining. I feel I have grasped a better understanding of each of the programs you have covered. I enjoyed the SDLC project.
lightkey Do not fall behind in doing the lessons because some of them take a long time to complete.
lightkey I thought the course was presented very well. The content is applicable to everyday use and a great refresher to all the programs we went over. It was very nice to have access to all the assignments and notes over WebCT.
lightkey I would tell them to do the projects on time and do not wait until the night before to do them.  I would also tell them to take Deb Fells' class.
lightkey I really enjoy the teacher of the class. Ms. Fells did a good job using her real world experience and knowledge mixed with the course content, and swirled with fun. I feel like I have a better understanding of the computer and look forward to learning more about it in the future.
lightkey Budget your time wisely. It is better to do a little bit of work each day. The work is challenging and time consuming, but not difficult. Extra help is available.
lightkey This class was very challenging. Thank you to Ms. Fells for being so cool.
lightkey The thing that I liked about this course the most was the PowerPoint presentations. Go to class every day and always do the assignments. If you  have any questions, make sure you ask the teacher when you are in class or when you return to class.
lightkey NEVER wait until the last minute to do assignments because it is SO easy to fall behind! I did learn a lot in the class, even if it was a lot of work.
lightkey At first I was overwhelmed by all the work we had to do in this course. But because of all we had to do, I know how to work every Microsoft Office program plus more. Some things were fun and some were hard, but I looked for the fun in it too.
lightkey What I like best about this class is that I've taken CIS105 for two times and believe me this was the best CIS class that I've ever been to. I've never seen an energetic teacher in my whole life, and I would like to thank you for not making this class a boring one. I can't believe I only got one absence. (By the way, I wish I had taken this class two semesters before :)
lightkey I was told this at the beginning of the semester, but I did not follow it -- do your work ahead of time! I found myself scrambling the night before to do my homework....so new students - do your work when it says to!
lightkey I was really impressed with how patient Deb Fells was working individually with the class. If she hadn't been, I may not have been as brave to finish the class. She was able to help on a multiple of levels. To new students: Face your fear of computers -- I did!
lightkey Thanks. I did not expect to learn and cover so much. This class will look good on a resume, and because I learned so much, I won't be reluctant to reference to my new knowledge.

I always dislike surprises when I am taking a course. Hopefully these words of wisdom from previous CIS 105 students will prove helpful to you. - I look forward to sharing the semester with you.....Deb Fells
