Start Date: 8/24
End Date: 12/16
Required Text: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 6th Edition, by James Stewart - buy the soft copy if you plan to only take 1 semester of Calculus.
Prerequisites: MAT 150/151/152 and 182/187 with a C or better or appropriate placement exam score.
Attendance: Since this is an online course, there is no official attendance. However, if you do not respond to emails, assignments, and other items for a duration of 2 weeks, I will give several attempts to determine your status. Failure to connect with you will result in the process of a teacher initiated withdrawal.
Homework: Homework is required for each chapter and must be submitted electronically to me in a WORD, PDF, or scanned file attachment through the WebCT mail system. There will be 25 questions from each chapter with 50 points as the maximum score for each. There is a 10 point deduction per day up to 3 days past the DUE DATE. No homework will be accepted after 3 days late.
Individual Projects: There are 2 small individual projects and they must be submitted electronically to me in either a WORD or PDF file attachment through the WebCT mail system. Each project is worth 50 points. There is a 5 point deduction per day up to 3 days past the DUE DATE. No projects will be accepted after 3 days late.
Quizzes: There is a timed quiz for each chapter and these will be available towards the end of each chapter. You will see that they are "live" when you log on near the end of the allotted chapter time as seen on the Course Calendar. Failure to log on and follow the course daily could result in your being late in completing the quizzes. You have two attempts at each quiz and they are worth 30 points each. The better of the two scores will be awarded.
Chapter Tests: There are 5 timed tests to match the 5 chapters. They, too, will become available at the end of the chapter time frame. Keep a lookout for them. You only get 1 attempt so make it your best. Make-ups are granted only in extreme cases (see MCC's Student Handbook guidelines) and must be done in the Testing Center on the MCC campus. There are no exceptions. Each test is worth 100 points.
Midterm & Semester Exam: These two exams are cumulative and must be taken on campus at MCC or if you are an out-of-state student in an appropriate proctored environment. It is your responsibility to arrange with me your testing day and time per our Course Calendar during the three day windows.

Special Needs Students: Any student who has been identified as requiring special assistance must have the appropriate forms on record at student services and must notify me as soon as possible so that I may best help you to be successful in this class.
My Expectations of You: Calculus requires both dedication to the learning of the topics and a strong desire to know not only the how but also the why. It is an exciting topic and in order to improve your chances of success I suggest the following:
1.Read each section ahead of time.
2. Complete the assigned homework problems & projects to the best of your ability.
3. Get help on those problems you do not understand! Options: Math Learning Center, online tutorials, your classmates, and myself.
4.Use technology as an aid for deeper exploration but expect to be able to defend all conclusions through algebraic methods.
My Commitment to You: I will provide timely feedback on your assignments and tests. I will make sure I respond to all your inquiries within 48 hours and will encourage you along the way.
Required Supplies: See the Technology link on the Homepage.
