Universals

In Metaphysics, a universal is "the one which stands over many." To get a grasp of universals, think of the color red. There are a wide variety of shades of red, yet we would say of each that they are red. In this case Red (or redness) is the universal which stands over then many particular shades of red of the spectrum.
