Philosophy of Mind

One of the main subdivisions of Metaphysics, the Philosophy of Mind is the philosophical investigation of the phenomena of consciousness.

The main problems in the Philosophy of Mind are:

These questions are usually addressed in the framework of two competing ontological theories: Dualism and Materialism. Dualists hold that consciousness is composed of a non-material substance, while Materialists, as their name would suggest, hold that consciousness is a material (i.e., brain) phenomena.

The Philosophy of Mind would spin off the science of Psychology in the early 20th Century, but it remains an active area of research in Academic Philosophy.
