Defended heliocentrism in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems for which he was accused of heresy by the Inquisition, forced to recant, and confined under house arrest for the last eight years of his life.

Galileo significantly improved on existing refracting telescope design improving magnification from 3x to 30x.
