From the Greek a (not) and gnosis (know). In Philosophy of Religion it is the position which maintains that because of our epistemic limitations we cannot know if God (i.e., as defined in Theism) exists. The agnostic maintains that both the sceptic (who denies God exists) and the theist (who asserts God exists) are epistemically unjustified. The agnostic does not deny God's existence, she merely maintains that we have insufficient evidence to know that God exists.
