Renee Descartes

Rene Descartes (1596-1650):
Argument for Interactive Dualism

  1. Arguments for the Mind/Body Distinction -:

P1. Skepticism leads to doubt of the body, not of the mind (cogito ergo sum)

    P2. 'I' refers to a thinking thing

P3. Bodies require space, minds do not

    C. Because of their distinct properties, they are different things

  2. Animals do not have Mind:

    1. They have no capacity for voluntary speech

    2. They have no capacity for abstract reasoning

  3. Pineal Gland as Seat of the Soul:

    1. It is the only non-doubled part of the brain
    2. Its alteration change the animal spirits, the animal spirits alter the pineal gland.
