COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To develop student's ability to communicate in both oral and written
Spanish.  To increase student's knowledge of Hispanic cultures.

COURSE STANDARDS:

Communication/correspondence

Once the course has begun, I will send most correspondence via WebCT email (there is a link to your WebCT email on the course homepage; the only way to check this mail is by logging on to the course).  I will also post important information relevant to all students in the course Announcements.  Occasionally, and especially at the beginning, I will send correspondence to your MCC email account.  It is your responsibility to check both of these mail boxes frequently.  If you have a question, you can email me at my MCC account (aimeeg@mail.mc.maricopa.edu), or use the course email. If your question might pertain to the rest of the class, please post it on the course Discussion Board in the "Preguntas y Comentarios" (Questions and Comments) section. I will make every attempt to respond to your questions within 48 hours except on weekends and holidays, and I expect you to do the same.

If you send me a message, I will reply directly to the email account you use.  If you use multiple accounts, it is your responsibility to check all of them.  MCC is not responsible for lost emails. Remember to leave enough space in your inbox to allow for the delivery of email.  For MCC accounts, you may need to empty the Trash occasionally, depending on the amount of mail that you receive, but you should save all of your course email for future reference.  Any technical questions should be directed to the MCC Technology Support Services (480) 461-7217.

Attendance and Withdrawal Policy

Although attendance may not seem critical in an online course, lack of participation in the course will be considered absence.  If you do not log on to the course AND set up your En Linea account by the end of the first week of class, you are considered a "no-show" and will be withdrawn from the course.

To keep good attendance you need to log on to the course regularly and maintain email communication with the instructor.  If I email you and do not hear back from you within 4 week days, I will proceed to withdraw you from the course.

TAREA (course work):

1 En Linea assignments 300 pts (50 pts / lesson)

Accessing assignments.  Most of the course content and assignments are located within the En Linea eCourse, for which you must set up an account.  Once you enter En Linea, there are 2 ways to access the assignments.  When you are working on a textbook page online, you will see assignment links on the left-hand side of the page, under each step.  Once you open an assignment, you can mouse over the "i" in the top left-hand corner to see whether or not it has been assigned and what type of grading it has been assigned.  (Note: you are able to submit any assignment whether or not it has been assigned for credit.).  You can access all assignments for a given lesson at once by clicking the "Assignments" link (Those marked with a diamond are assigned for credit.).

Types of assignments.  Assignments range from multiple choice, short-answer, long-answer, paragraph and dialogue writing, individual and paired oral and written work. Some of the assignments will be automatically graded by the computer the moment you submit them, while others will require either oral or written feedback from your instructor.  In order to learn the material as you go through each lesson, it is very important that you review your assignment results.  To do so, click the "My results" tab in your En Linea Student Workstation.  Choose the section you wish to review (For example: Lesson 1 All).  Review the results for any assignment by clicking the bar graph icon under "Performance summary." Note: you will see a clipboard icon anytime there is feedback from your instructor.  Please be sure to review all instructor comments.

Paired assignments.  Some assignments require that you work online with a partner.  To complete these assignments, go to the "Find an e-partner" link at the top right of the En Linea screen, and initiate a partnership with another student who is also working online (see "Resources" link on the course homepage for detailed  instructions).  It is highly recommend that you find a partner in advance, by posting your availability on the Discussion Board.  You and your partner should arrange to be working online at the same time at least once a week.  You do not have to work with the same partner throughout the semester, but it is your responsibility to find someone to work with for all paired assignments.  Credit will not be given for paired work that is completed without a partner.

Practice assignments. Some assignments are designated as "practice."  While you are strongly encouraged to complete any assignment that seems beneficial to you, only those marked as "graded" or "credit/no-credit" will be scored.

Credit/no-credit assignments.  Assignments designated as "credit/no-credit" will only be scored if they are complete, and a valid attempt was made.

Late assignments. Be sure to follow the Course Schedule when completing assignments.  Although En Linea will allow you to submit work beyond the deadline, you will not receive credit for any assignments that are submitted late.  No exceptions.

Multiple attempts. En Linea allows you multiple attempts to submit assignments.  You are encouraged to take advantage of this.  Your final score for an assignment will be based on your latest attempt (up to the lesson deadline).

Note: Spanish 101 covers only lessons 1-6, although you have access to all 18 lessons of the En Linea program.

2 Repaso  strongly recommended

For each lesson in En Linea, there is set of supplementary internet activities.  There is also a link to these activities in the Resources folder on the course homepage.  It is strongly recommended that you complete the auto-graded Repaso exercise after each lesson in preparation for the lesson quiz.

3

Participación:
Live Chat and
Discussion Board

150 pts

Participation points will be given for your participation in the live chat sessions and your contributions to the Discussion Board.

CHAT SESSIONS (10 pts each = 100 pts)

Live chat sessions will be held most Tuesdays, at 1:00pm and 9:00pm (AZ time), and will last 30-45 minutes.  The specific dates and topics are included in the course schedule.  You are required to attend 10 chats per semester (one chat each week, allowing you to miss 3).  You MUST be on time and prepared in order to receive credit.

Click the "Chat" link on the course homepage to enter the chat room.  Enter as a guest, and enter your first and last name.  (Note:  you will need to have Flash Player installed on your computer to use this tool.)

DISCUSSION BOARD (15 pts each; 5 pts introduction = 50 pts)

There are 4 Discussion Board activities (see course schedule for due dates and details).  You are required to post at least one original message to the current topic, as well as a reply to one of your classmate's postings, by the deadline stated in the course schedule.  A grade will not be given for messages that are posted past the deadline. (See scoring rubrics.)

The Discussion Board also serves as a bulletin board for you to communicate with your classmates.  There will be a section (preguntas y comentarios) for you to post your questions and comments.  Please use this to share your technical expertise and tips, as well as to ask each other or your instructor for help.

Another important use of the Discussion Board is for you to find a partner for the  paired En Linea assignments.  You and your partner will occasionally need to be working online at the same time in order to complete certain oral assignments in each lesson.

You will also post your final project on the Discussion Board.

4 Pruebas (quizzes) 300 pts (50 pts / lesson)

There will be a written quiz following each lesson.  These quizzes will focus on the lesson grammar, vocabulary, and theme. The quizzes are located within the En Linea eCourse, and will be available for a 36-hour period (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) on the days they are scheduled. Click on the "Prueba" link at the end of the lesson to begin a quiz (under Table of Contents).

Each quiz will be timed and graded.  You will have 60 minutes to complete the quiz for full credit.  If you take longer than 60 minutes, a point will be deducted for each minute beyond the allotted time.

Do not use your book or notes for taking the written quizzes.

Do not take the quiz more than once.  Only your first attempt will be scored.

I will correct the quiz within 48 hours (excluding weekends).  To view your results and instructor comments, click the "My Results" tab in your En Linea Student Workstation, select the quiz under the "Section" menu, and click on the clip board icon.

Absolutely no make-up quizzes will be given.

5 Proyecto final 100 pts

As a final project, you will write an autobiography. Use the vocabulary and grammar learned during this course to describe yourself.  Post your autobiography on the course Discussion Board by November 30th.  The autobiography must be a minimum of 250 words, written in Spanish using Spanish characters.

After you post your autobiography, you have until December 3rd to read the autobiographies of your classmates and post a brief response to at least 5 of them.

(See scoring rubrics.)

6 Examen final 100 pts  written  50 pts oral

There will be a comprehensive written and oral final exam.  You are required to take the written final in person at the MCC main campus (Southern and Dobson), in the  Language Lab (room AS110).   (Note:  You will need a photo ID).  The written final will be available from 8:00 am on Monday, December 10th, until noon on Wednesday, December 12th.  If you live outside the Phoenix area, please contact your instructor immediately so alternative arrangements can be made.

The oral final is to be taken live with your instructor in the course chat room.  Your instructor will send out an email to set up an appointment toward the end of the semester.  The exam will consist of the following:  You will answer 5-10 personal questions in Spanish, using complete sentences; you will be given 2 situations to relate (act out) in Spanish.
