MAGIC OF MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOPS for Grades 1 through 12

MCC Music Department

Enjoy three fun-filled Musical Comedy/Movement Workshops for 1st through 12th graders. Each session will culminate in a Dazzling Broadway Musical performance! Classes will stress techniques in singing, dancing and acting. Each student, except for students in Workshop III, will be required to bring a recording device. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. We will strive to maintain a gender balance in each of the three workshops.

SUMMER JAZZ WORKSHOP for high school students and Young Adults

MCC Music Department

The workshop provides instrumental students with an intense, one week long musical experience studying and performing jazz in a small combo setting. Participants have the opportunity to work with leading educators and professional musicians in theory, listening, master class and ensemble rehearsals. The combos will conclude the week with a concert.

Learning with Computers

MACHINIMA -- STUDIO 180 – where video production meets game technology for Grades 8 through 12

MCC Business Department

If you love playing video games and want to learn how to create your own game-based movies, then this camp is for you! Specialists in the technology field instruct teens on the techniques used in both digital video production and video game technology. Upon completion of the camp, students will have produced their own Machinima movies within a team environment. The word Machinima (muh-sheen-eh-mah) comes from combining machine (computer) and cinema (video) and involves film making within a real-time, 3D virtual environment, often using 3D video-game technologies. The student-centered learning environment includes state-of-the-art hardware and software in a multimedia studio (named Studio 180+) and a computer lab. High-end computers, video equipment, and a chroma key green screen will be utilized to create the end products.

Pre-requisite: Experience playing various video games and basic computer operations.

ALICE WORLD BUILDING CAMP - Animating 3D Worlds for Grades 7 through 10

With Alice, you will be able to create exciting, visually appealing, 3D animation stories, and interactive games. 3D MODELING WITH BLENDER for grades 8 through 12

MCC Business Department

Create and modify 3D models using the powerful open source 3D Modeling and Animation software, Blender! Learn how to create and modify wireframes, apply textures and animate 3D figures as used in games and movies! The Camp includes lecture and demonstration, individual and group project direction, open source software and on-line materials for use outside of the Camp.

THE ORGANIC ANIMATION STUDIO for Grades 6 through 8

Do you love animated films like Fantastic Mr. Fox or Corpse Bride? Ever thought about making your own animations? The Organic Animation Studio at Mesa Community College is a hands-on learning environment for young people interested in exploring the amazing world of stop-motion animation. Students will learn a variety of creative techniques for constructing and drawing animated characters and scenes, and will utilize simple and affordable equipment and software to create their own animated films. The Organic Animation Studio is limited to 21 students.

Lasso lizards, catch insects, observe living creatures under the bushes and in the pond in the unique, natural, desert environment at the MCC Red Mountain campus. In addition to seeing desert "critters" in their natural environment, students will learn first-hand how to use science to study them.

Storm Chasing is an exciting look at all types of severe weather: tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms and lightning, floods, and more! Students will work with forecasting meteorologists to learn how to forecast and identify these deadly weather events.

KICKSTART KINDERGARTEN for students entering Kindergarten *

Students entering Kindergarten will prepare for school in a fun, engaging, safe environment with teachers who have many years of experience working with the early learner. Kickstart will cover state standards in all subject areas through exciting, hands-on activities. Covered will be letter recognition and phonemic sounds to acquire the building blocks for reading. Comprehension strategies will be developed using award-winning children’s literature and the writing process will be introduced while looking at bugs. Development of number sense and numerical operations for math will use computers, estimation, probability and measurement will be introduced while preparing food, and logic and problem solving will be incorporated focusing on animals, science discovery and geographic explorations.

KICKSTART 1st GRADE for students entering 1st Grade

MCC Education Department

Students entering 1st Grade will prepare for school in a fun, engaging, safe environment with teachers who have many years of experience working with the early learner. Kickstart will cover state standards in all subject areas through exciting, hands-on activities. To provide a firm foundation for reading, students will gain a firm grasp on phonemic sounds, acquire decoding skills, spend time on spelling patterns and learn 1st grade site words. Comprehension and writing skills will be developed through award-winning children’s literature. For mathematics, the focus will be on number sense and numerical operations while using computers, we will work on estimation, probability and measurement while preparing food. Logic and problem solving will focus on science discovery and geographic explorations. We will culminate the week with a ‘100 Day’ where students will create their own word problems using addition and subtraction and instructors will use centers to expose the children to the building blocks of multiplication and algebra.

One of a Kind!

KID’S CULINARY CAMP for Grades 3 through 6

MCC Culinary Studies

Young chefs will learn safety and responsibility in the kitchen plus how to make a dinner for the family. Young chefs will also learn:

  • proper knife skills
  • appropriate oven use
  • use of different ingredients
  • how to measure ingredients
  • how to read package labels
  • how to read and comprehend recipes
  • (students may even create their own recipe!)
  • the importance of presentation and flavor in food

Food themes for the three day culinary experience will include authentic Spanish dishes, Asian cuisine, classic French with a twist, pastries and baked goods including cake decorating and design, and frozen desserts and beverages. The young chefs will learn the importance of team efforts while cooking, cleaning and serving each other. On the final day of the three-day Camp, parents are invited to join their children for a lunch sampling of what their young chef has created. Class limited to 12 students.

Girls Out Loud! Empowerment for Girls Grades 7 through 9

MCC Cultural Science Department

This workshop will focus on empowering girls by understanding how popular culture affects their image of themselves. Studies show that eight in ten girls today believe they are not good enough or feel they don’t measure up in one of the following ways – their looks, performance in school, and relationships with friends and family members. This workshop invites girls to discover the power of popular culture and the impact on girls’ visions of themselves.
