Definition of Service-Learning Assistants SLA's
Service-Learning Assistants (SLA) work closely with faculty members and the Center for Service-Learning in referring students to agencies to complete their service-learning assignment. They often serve as liaisons between the class and our department.
Duties:
- Attend one mandatory orientation
- Attend mandatory monthly Service-Learning Assistant Meetings
- Report weekly to the Program Specialist
- Attend the class to which you are assigned
- Ensure all service-learning students have signed and turned in their forms
- Assist faculty in placing students
- Keep your class database information updated
- Make certificates at the end of the semester for all those who completed service-learning
- Report issues or problems to the Center for Service-Learning
Qualifications:
- Ability to work with faculty and students in a professional manner
- Be a “go getter” (Help place students, keep in contact with teacher, be assertive, etc)
- Have good communication skills (willing and able to make announcements to the class)
- Have good organizational skills. Service-Learning Assistants work closely with instructors by keeping an up-to-date weekly database of forms and students’ progress
- Dependable, punctual, and knowledgeable
- Knowledge of computer applications and record keeping skills
- Have completed personal service-learning experience (recommended)
- Can maintain a positive attitude about service-learning to other students and community partners
Time Frame:
Able to spend as much time needed to complete all assigned duties. The length of the position is for one semester.
Location:
Mesa Community College, Center for Service-Learning, at Southern & Dobson and Red Mountain Campus. Each student will be placed in different classrooms so the exact location varies.
