AmeriCorps is a national service program initiated by President Clinton, often referred to as the "domestic Peace Corps." AmeriCorps provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with education awards in exchange for their service to local communities. Nationally, over 80,000 AmeriCorps Members annually help to meet the nation's most critical needs in the areas of economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families and healthy futures.
Compact Service CorpsThe current grant offered through AmeriCorps at Mesa Community College is "Compact Service Corps". There are 2 options available:
Healthy Futures
The Healthy Futures focus area is designed primarily for Nursing & Dental Hygiene students. In order to qualify as an appropriate project under the Healthy Futures Focus Area in the Compact Service Corps AmeriCorps Program, the Member must provide preventative and/or primary health care for underserved patients/clients. Your service must be completed at a nonprofit healthcare facility.
Education
The Education focus area is designed for anyone interested in working with youth. In order to qualify as as an appropriate project under the Education Focus Area in the Compact Service Corps AmeriCorps Program, the Member must work with students who are between kindergarten through 12th grades on improving academic engagement (an increase in activity completion and an increase in student participation and retention). All Members must serve the same group of K-12 students for a minimum of 300 hours. Your service must be completed at an approved high-need school.
In exchange for valuable community service, CSC Members receive an education award that can be applied to qualified school loans or to current education expenses. The award amount depends on the term of service completed.
Beyond the education award, Members:
Members who successfully complete a term of service with AmeriCorps receive an education award which can be used to pay for current tuition costs or to repay qualified student loans.
