Downloading Files - Safety and Browser Instructions

Downloading Files from the Internet Safely

Before you download any content or file from any website be sure you know exactly what you're getting. Learn and use safe sites for downloading files, avoid peer-to-peer network sharing. It is tempting to download the hot new movie or music, but more often than not those downloads are not really the files you wanted. Remember these three basic rules of downloading safely:

Do not download any files you did not initiate:

If you get a prompt or pop-up suddenly asking you to download something but you were not in the process of downloading or installing anything, decline the download. If it forces itself and begins to download, immediately cancel the download or disable your wired/wireless internet connection to prevent the file from installing on your computer.

Do not download files that appear to be named differently than what you selected:

For example, if you are attempting to download Java, the file should be named jpxinstaller or javaupdate. If the file name is drastically different, such as mediadownloadercontent, do not allow the download to complete. If it forces itself and begins to download, immediately cancel the download or disable your wired/wireless internet connection to prevent the file from installing on your computer.

Do not download any files if the size is much different than the typical size of the format:

Most file types have typical size expectations, malware and infected files can pretend to be a certain file type in order to get onto your computer. Pay attention to the size of the download, a much smaller than expected size can indicate an imposter file. Common file type sizes:
