MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE ART 295 DC FUNDAMENTALS OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Using a digital darkroom, the student will learn how to use a digital or conventional camera to produce photographic images. A brief introduction to digital photographic processes is discussed to better understand how a digital camera produces an image. The student will be introduced to a digital darkroom, to include the use of a scanner, a card/stick ³reader², digital imaging software, and a color printer. The student will produce a limited number of digital prints.

MATERIALS:

The student will need one of the following:
  1. A standard 35mm camera that the student can adjust the aperture and shutter speed.
  2. Or a digital camera one megapixel or higher is recommended.
If the standard 35 mm camera format is used the student will need to purchase color print film. These films may be purchased at conventional photographic supply stores. All the major brands (100, 200, 400, or 800 speed with 12, 24, or 36 exposures) are acceptable. If the digital format is chosen the student will need to provide his/her own memory sticks or cards. 16 or 64 or 128 MB are available.

COURSE GOAL:

The student will be introduced to the basic principles and techniques of digital photography and the camera and its components. In a series of basic hands-on exercises the student will experiment with basic techniques of depth of field (aperture), lighting techniques (natural and artificial), motion, and portraiture. The student will learn how to transfer images to a computer; and how to edit the images using a digital darkroom. A limited number of prints will be made.
