The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Intermediate Piano Pedagogy program is for pianists who want to teach intermediate piano students. Classes offered include learning various methods, techniques, repertoire, skills, style and musicianship necessary to teach piano effectively.

What You’ll Learn

This pathway map will help you gain the expertise needed to:

  1. Compare and contrast the characteristics and styles of the music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods.
  2. Analyze, practice and perform solo and ensemble piano pieces to enhance performance skills and techniques.
  3. Analyze, compare, and evaluate intermediate through early advanced piano teaching techniques, methods and repertoire.
  4. Analyze, practice, develop and perform basic jazz piano skills, including chord construction, chord voicing, accompanying and solo piano arrangements.
  5. Analyze, practice, develop and perform sight-reading skills, ensemble playing and accompanying.
  6. Analyze, develop and demonstrate techniques for third semester level private piano instruction emphasizing musicianship, literature and performance.
  7. Describe the key events, accomplishments and innovations relating to keyboard literature in music history and music literature to 1750.
  8. Analyze, develop and demonstrate techniques for fourth semester level private piano instruction emphasizing musicianship, literature and performance.

Course Sequence by Term

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

  • Students should meet with an academic advisor to develop an individual education plan that meets their academic and career goals. Use the Pathway Planner tool in your Student Center to manage your plan.
  • The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
  • Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
  • Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
