Starting in 2006, Karl has been providing consulting services in the areas of strategic planning, group facilitation, mediation, training, grant work, and asset mapping to a variety of for and not-for-profit organizations. Prior to that, Karl was the V.P. and lead staff for the community development programs at the Initiative Foundation in Little Falls for nearly nine years. This work included leadership training and grant making initiatives. The Initiative Foundation serves 14 counties in Central Minnesota. Karl trained regularly with his mentor, Don Bargen, who has worked as a consultant at Maricopa Community Colleges.

Prior to that time, he was with Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Mn. for over seven years working in classroom instruction, human service program coordination, curriculum development, and service-learning coordination. Community organizing, community development, and partnering with nonprofits were the foci of his service-learning efforts.

Karl worked for 10 years with Kaposia, inc., a nonprofit, where he led efforts to convert their services for adults with severe disabilities from traditional, segregated services to a community and asset-based employment service. Karl has also worked as a naturalist, Park Ranger and tour leader. Karl has Bachelor of Science degrees in Recreation, Park Administration and Community Education and Geography from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is a current Commissioner on the Crow Wing County H.R.A and past board member and President of the Gordon Rosenmeier for State and Local Government. He is active in and through his church. Karl was awarded the 2002 Service to Mankind Award for the Brainerd Lakes Area, by the noon Sertoma Club.
