During Jan. 19th celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the City’s MLK Committee presented an award and four scholarships to local residents as part of the day’s proceedings.

The committee awarded the 2015 Veora E. Johnson Spirit of Unity, Educator of the Year award to Mona Scott, a faculty member of Mesa Community College. Scott was recognized for encouraging her students to examine racial attitudes and make personal changes to promote societal equity.

The committee also presented four MCC students - Salwa Ahmed of Tempe, Denise Horton of Mesa, Dominique Hunter of Mesa and Neal Glover of Mesa, with $250 scholarships.
