1300 years ago Abd al-Rahman launched one of the truly great moments of human history, and called it al - Andalus. For 750 years, Muslims, Jews and Christians lived a time of "convivencia." The memory of that time is very much alive in modern Andalucía, the southern part of Spain. Now you can spend four weeks in the city of Granada, the last capital of al-Andalus, set against the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains. Study the history and the culture with professors from MCC and the University of Granada, while immersed in "la vida española" of flamenco, bullfights, soccer, Mediterranean beaches, tapas and café con leche.

Granada, Andalucía, Spain. Granada - what an amazing place! It's the ancient city of the Moors and their magnificent palace, the Alhambra, once the stronghold of the Muslim empire of the Nasrid dynasty in southern Spain. From the time historical records began Granada was ruled by many Caliphs, Arabic sultans and dynasties. The Arabic/Muslim empire once stretched right up into the north of Spain. The various Christian groups settled their differences, joined together and steadily drove the Arabs out of Spain. Granada was the last stronghold and finally succumbed to Isabel and Ferdinand (the catholic monarchs) in 1492. The Muslim and the Jews were forced to leave the country or convert to Christianity. A period of what would nowadays be described as ethnic cleansing ensued. At the same time Christopher Columbus came to Granada to ask Isabel and Ferdinand for a grant to build ships so that he could conquer the Americas.
Granada is located in the province of Andalucía in the south along the Mediterannean. The name Andalucía traces back to the Arabic language Al-Andalus. As well as Muslim and Romani influences, the region's history and culture have been influenced by the earlier Iberians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths, all of whom preceded the Muslims, as well as the Castilian and other Christian North Iberian nationalities who conquered and repopulated the area in the latter phases of the Reconquista.
