2015 Study Abroad Scholarships

The International Education Office offers study abroad scholarships to provide financial support to students who wish to participate in a Mesa Community College (MCC) sponsored study abroad program.  All scholarship opportunities are available to Mesa Community College students who wish to participate in a MCC sponsored study abroad program.  

The scholarship applications are available online.  A general scholarship application must be completed online prior to being able to apply for and complete the individual study abroad program scholarship application.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship application is incorporated into each study abroad program scholarship application, therefore, there is only one application for each individual study abroad program to be completed if you desire to considered for the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarships.

Each study abroad program has it's own scholarship application to be completed.  If you plan to attend multiple study abroad programs you will need to complete a separate scholarship application for each program you want to be considered for.  Please read the criteria carefully. 

AWARD AMOUNT: Total amount of International Education Study Abroad Scholarship award per student may not exceed $1,000. ($400 maximum for Puerto Peñasco program.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to IE Study Abroad Scholarship.

Deadline to submit all Study Abroad Scholarships: February 27, 2015 at 11:59pm.

What to do before you begin your scholarship applications:

  1. Get admitted to MCC
    • You will be prompted to enter your Student ID Number. You can find your Student ID Number in your My.maricopa.edu account.
    • Go to My.maricopa.edu to apply for a MEID.
  2. Complete the Student Declaration Form at MCC to update your residency status.
  3. Before applying for any study abroad scholarship(s), you MUST have applied to and been accepted into a study abroad program at MCC.
  4. Complete the 2014-2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by January 27, 2015 (at least 30 days before the scholarship deadline of February 27, 2015) to maximize your scholarship opportunities.  NOTE: The FAFSA is required for the Need-Based Study Abroad Scholarship and the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship application (The Maricopa Grant scholarship is incorporated into the Need-Based Study Abroad scholarship application.)

How to apply for the study abroad scholarships:

  1. You will first need to complete the general application in the Maricopa Community Colleges Scholarships Database online at maricopa.academicworks.com/users/sign_in.  The general application is only required to be completed once per academic year.  If you have previously completed the general application you may proceed to apply for any of the study abroad scholarships.
  2. Once you begin your scholarship application, you will be able to save your work and return at any time to complete and submit your application.  Make sure you click on save before you log out so that you don't lose all your information.
  3. Once you complete the general application you will then be able to apply for the International Education Study Abroad Scholarships.
  • NOTE: There are six different International Education Study Abroad Scholarship applications, one for each individual study abroad program.  The applications must be completed for each program you plan to attend in order to be considered for a scholarship.
  1. AFTER YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.  Please check all your answers before you submit your application.
  2. Incomplete scholarship applications will automatically be disqualified.
  3. All scholarships awarded are conditional upon your full participation in your study abroad program.  If you withdraw from your program, for any reason (voluntary or involuntary), all awards will be revoked. If your award is revoked after funds have been disbursed to you, you will be billed for the amount of the award through your My.maricopa.edu student account.

How can I use my Study Abroad Scholarship(s)?

The Study Abroad Scholarships may be used to fund program fees and/or tuition and registration fees. The maximum award amount per student is $1000 ($400 maximum for Puerto Peñasco program).  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the IE Study Abroad Scholarship.  Applications will be scored based on the following criteria:

Scholarship Criteria

1) Must have applied to and been accepted in to a study abroad program at Mesa Community College.

2) Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application.

3) Must complete the Personal Statement of Financial Need.

4) Scoring is based on whether the student is a current Mesa Community College student, a Maricopa County Community College District student, an in-state student, or an out-of-state student. Priority may be given to current Mesa Community College students.

5) Must be able to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. See acceptable documents to establish lawful presence (http://www.maricopa.edu/residency/lawfulpresdoc.php).

6) OPTIONAL: Additional assistance for tuition only through the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may become available if you are able to demonstrate financial need which requires completion of the 2014 – 2015 Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) form at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

  • If you need assistance completing the form, please visit the Financial Aid Office.
  • You should file a FAFSA by February 1, 2015 (at least 30 days before the study abroad scholarship deadline of February 27, 2015).
  • Without the completion of a FAFSA submitted to Mesa Community College at the time the application is reviewed by MCC, additional aid will not be considered.
  • This grant applies only to courses taken during Summer Session I.

NOTE: Once you begin your scholarship application, you will be able to save your work. We highly recommend you write your essay in MS Word or another similar word processor, then copy and paste it in the space provided for your essay. Once you submit your application, you will not be able to make any changes.

2015 Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship Information

The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship funding is limited to tuition and fees associated with a Summer I program. Please note that the application for the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship is incorporated in the International Education Study Abroad  Scholarship applications (there is one application per study abroad program).  There is no separate application to be completed for the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship.  Additional questions for consideration of the Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship are optional.   Applications will be scored based on the criteria listed below.


AWARD AMOUNT VARIES: Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship is limited to tuition, registration and course fee(s) for the individual program a student is participating in.  The award may not be applied to other study abroad program fees.  The Maricopa Grant Study Abroad Scholarship may be awarded in addition to the International Education Study Abroad Scholarship.

  • Demonstration of Financial Need which requires completion of the 2014-2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you need assistance completing the form, please visit the Financial Aid Office. You should file a FAFSA by February 27, 2015 (at least 30 days before the study abroad scholarship deadline of January 27, 2015).
  • Grant is open to all students but focuses on student of color and/or under-represented populations participating in MCC's study abroad programs.
  • Must be able to demonstrate lawful presence in the United States. See acceptable documents to establish lawful presence (www.maricopa.edu/residency/lawfulpresdocs.php).

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Online Application Open

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is happy to announce that the online application system is now open for students participating in study abroad programs during the Spring 2015, Summer 2015.  

The application for spring 2015 and the early application for summer 2015 to study or intern abroad is now open!  The deadline to submit an early applicaton is October 7, 2014 by 11:59pm Central Time.  If you miss the early application deadline for summer you can still apply and that application will open January 2015 and close on March 3, 2015.
