Smoking on Campus

MCC follows the Tobacco Free Administrative Regulation as defined by the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD)
The basics:
- Smoking is prohibited in enclosed district/college/center buildings and within twenty-five (25) feet of any building entrance or exit. This includes covered outdoor walkways and overhangs.
- Smoking is prohibited in any areas where flammable gases, liquids or any other volatile materials are located or stored or in which a fire or safety hazard may exist.
- Smoking is prohibited in all district/college center vehicles.
- The sale of cigarettes or other tobacco items is prohibited at all sites within the Maricopa District.
In addition and in accordance with A.R.S. 36-601.01, which prohibits smoking within a reasonable distance of an entrance or exit, and where reasonable distance is defined in state administrative rule as a minimum of 20 feet, the 25 foot limit established by the MCCCD helps to minimize smoke from entering a building.
Mesa Community College has established designated areas throughout campus where smoking is permitted. Designated smoking areas are consistent with the intent and spirit of various state and local doctrines that either limit or prohibit smoking in public areas. Maps reflecting the designated areas are being updated to reflect this change. Questions related to these locations can be directed to Occupational Health & Safety at 480-461-7360.
