MCC School of Education

The Education Studies Department at Mesa Community College offers coursework and programs consistent with the state’s emphasis on P-20 education to guide students in a variety of teacher education paths helping to fill the need for highly qualified teachers.

Pre-service teacher education programs are available for early childhood education, elementary education, special education and secondary education that lead to occupational certificates of completion or associate’s degrees designed to transfer into university teacher certification bachelor’s degree programs.

The department also offers a variety of professional development courses designed to help practicing educators fulfill continuing education requirements while adding state-approved teaching endorsements to their current teacher certifications.

NAUTeach for Prospective Math and Science Teachers

The NAUTeach program allows science and math majors to explore teaching as a career in a low-risk manner before making a commitment to the profession.  Beginning Fall 2010 one-credit introductory classes (EDU111 and EDU112) can be taken at MCC that provide field experiences in local K-12 classrooms in preparation for the NAUTeach program. Tutor Training Course Offered Online

Volunteers, instructional assisitants, after school program employees, as well as K-12 teachers seeking professional development will learn useful tutoring techniques by taking EDU 101AA or EDU 101AB Tutor Training & Practicum I or II.  These open entry / open exit courses are delivered in a convenient Internet format and include hands-on experience.  Thirty (30) hours of practicum are needed for EDU 101AA and sixty (60) are required for EDU 101AB.  The course focuses on culture as well as reading and writing strategies to serve English language learners.  Contact: Megan Karns Garvy, mkarns@mesacc.edu.

Earn a BS Degree From GCU Without Leaving MCC

Beginning Fall 2010 Grand Canyon University is offering a mix of in-person and internet-based courses at the Southern & Dobson campus toward a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.  Students are encouraged to take up to 84 credits at any of the Maricopa Colleges.  Participants of this special MCC-GCU cohort receive a reduced GCU tuition rate.
