English Programs

Writing

The Department has never tried to concentrate on any one area of literature or on a single critical orientation. Rather, we have worked to gather a lively diversity of professors with strengths in every facet of literary endeavor.

MCC’s English Department offers comprehensive programs in the following areas:

  • Composition:
The Composition Program helps students learn to write effectively in academic, professional, civic and personal contexts.  In addition to the required first-year composition courses (ENG 101 and ENG 102), MCC offers courses in developmental writing, technical writing, academic writing, and personal exploratory writing.

  • Creative Writing:
Creative Writing courses are offered with both the ENG and CRW prefixes.  We offer introductory courses along with more specialized workshops in poetry, fiction, and screenwriting.

  • English as a Second Language:
MCC’s ESL program offers four levels of courses in English grammar, listening and speaking, and writing with oral practice. After taking the language placement test (CELSA), students are advised about appropriate classes and program options.
