The megalithic sites on Malta and Gozo are not only monuments of the past but illustrate how people made connections with their ancestors. These were places of ritual where people were buried and exhumed in rituals we might find somewhat gruesome but for the people then they were important ways to keep connections between the living and the dead. The temples were above ground but the real significant parts of these megalithic complexes was underground in the tomb of the ancestors.

It was the worship of the ancestors that was important. It was almost like keeping the connections of family alive even when someone died. The family for many human societies is the safety network that people depended upon for survival. It was the cooperative efforts of everyone that enabled people to survive, particularly in the face of shortages and scarcity.

A ritual we find bizarre but it reflects cultural changes taking place on Malta and Gozo over time.
