use of the anthrowiki

http://wiki.mc.maricopa.edu/anthrowiki

The purpose of the anthrowiki is for sharing information. There are series of areas that have been defined for this purpose based on different classes or related ways for exploring different things.

This is the beginning - creating an account. In the upper right-hand corner is a link for logging in or creating an account. This is where you start if you don't have an account. Anyone can create an account by identifying a username and password. Once you have this you can login with these and edit.

The main page of the anthrowiki has several features you will use or can use. In the upper right-hand corner is the login and create an account link. There are the main sections defined in the main heading. On the left side is a link to the community portal which is a general comment area for things you are seeing on the wiki or how it can be used. There is a help link here as well. The Basic Rules area is designed to establish rules for use - or at least to suggest some rules that users should follow. This is an open forum and it is expected that everyone will treat each other with respect. It is useful to include you name when you input some things.

TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT Click the link in the upper right-hand corner and you will find this page. Click on the "Create an account" link.

Type in a username, password (remember this one).

Please use a real email address and add your "real" name so we can track things a bit. This information is valuable at times.

Once you have created an account and are logged in you can edit things - input things! This is an easy process. You start by finding the right portal - start on the main page with the different segments and then inside the one you want you will find a list of portals.

This is the list of portals you may find if you were in one of the online classes. The other segments have similar portals - everything on these pages is called a portal.

When you want to edit you have two ways to do this. The first is to find the tab at the top of the individual page you want to edit and click that. You will be able to edit all of the content on the page. Once there is content on the page there will be separate areas you can edit -

If you edit you will see something like this:

Use this just as you would a word processor. The buttons are shortcuts for editing. They will allow you to create headings, bold text, create internal or external links or insert a picture. Rolling your mouse over them will highlight what function they serve.

Using the wiki is the best way to learn how to use it. It is a word processor in a way but it does generate a web page when done. Use the preview button at the bottom of the page to periodically see what you are doing. When you are really done - save it with the Save button.

Scripting Information

Inserting a picture requires that you upload the picture to the server. If you want to include a thumb of the picture on the page you are editing - copy and paste the following into the insert image space replacing what is there between the two pair of brackets:

Image:picturename.jpg|thumb|100px This will produce a small version of the picture that someone can click on and see the original larger version.

To upload a picture preview the page and click on the image link - it will open a page for you to browse your computer and upload the image as you have named it in the link. You don't have to match the name - it will be named whatever you said it was when you created the link.

Make sure if the image is a "gif" that you designate it as such in the link or if it is "jpg" use this designation in the link.

Left Justication with a Picture

The following would allow you to place a picture to the left side of the window:

Image:picturename.jpg|thumb|left|170px|picture title

Copy and paste this between the pair of double brackets to create the link.
