Prehistoric Engineering

Artist's rendition of the construction of what is believed to have been either a lunar marker or solar calender. Archeologists speculate that the carefully aligned posts either helped the moundbuilders mark important dates or assisted them in the placement of certain mounds as they were built. One such structure at Cahokia in Illinois was called "American Woodhenge." Illustration by Lloyd K. Townsend. Use prohibitied without permission.
