Village Life

Mound cities on the Mississippi River and its tributaries were, in many ways, like our own--alive with commerce, industry, and development. Life was shaped by politics, religion, and well-established social customs. This artist's rendition of an everyday scene from Cahokia in Illinois, was likely a common one all along the Mississippi, although women probably were more active in trade, craft making, and leadership than shown here. Illustration by Michael Hampshire. Use prohibited without permission.
