Prelicense: Steps to obtaining a Real Estate Sales License
Step 1: Complete 90 Hours of Course Work
- REA179 Real Estate Principles I (45 Hours)
- REA180 Real Estate Principles II (45 Hours)
- Students must receive a grade of C or better in both REA179 & REA180 to be eligible for the Prelicensure Education Certificate
- Courses can be completed in an 8 or 16 week session and can be taken concurrently
- Review the Candidate Information Bulletin
- Once a student has satisfied all the course requirements they will be issued their Prelicensure Education Cetificate. This certificate is good for 10 years
Step 2: Taking the State Examination
- Register and Schedule your examinations with Prometric. Prometric Exam fee is $90.
In order to register and schedule your state exam you must have your Prelicensure Education Certificate and Candidate Information Bulletin.

- Mesa Community College offers an excellent Exam Prep CD that's sold in the M.C.C. Bookstore for $45.00.
It's an interactive computer based format with 999 National, State, Math and Vocabulary questions. They are presented in 50-question sessions with instant feedback that includes a detailed explanation of the questions missed. You never have the same exam twice. - State Exam consists of 80 general real estate (120 minutes) and 60 Arizona State Law multiple-choice questions (90 minutes).
75% is the passing ratio for each of the two exam sections (not a combination of exams). Cost: $90 - Student must arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled testing time and have their Prelicensure Education Certificate; (yellow forms received from your school), a current, valid and government-issued identification (driver's license, state-issued identification card, military identification card); it must have a current photo and your signature, the name on the identification must be the same as the name used to register for the exam (including designations such as Jr. or III); and a 4-function calculator.
Failure to provide appropriate identification at the time of the examination is considered a missed appointment. - Exams are given on a personal computer at a Prometric Testing Center.
You do not need any computer experience or typing skill to take an exam.
Exam results are given immediately.
If a student fails any portion of the exam they must retake only the portion they failed.
A $90 retest fee will be charged for any failure exam. - Cancellation of State Exams are required within 3 days of testing or the charged fee will be collected and rescheduling will result in an additional fee.
Step 3: Contract Writing Certification
- Prior to being licensed, the A.D.R.E. requires each student to attend a 6-hour course in contracts called "Introduction to Contract Writing".
- This course fulfills 3-hours of of Real Estate Legal Issues (L) and 3-hours of Contract Law (CL) renewal credits. Certification will be given at the end of class.
- Pre-Registration and Pre-payment of the $40 fee is required.

- 2 Prometric Examination Score Reports

- Fingerprints on an ADRE approved fingerprint card
