Spring 2009 Welcome Message

Dr. Shouan Pan's Spring 2009 Welcome Message

Hello, I am Shouan Pan, president of Mesa Community College. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2009 spring semester, and give you an update in a few areas that may be of interest to you.

This past semester we opened a new state-of-the-art physical science building and planetarium. Not only does this first LEED certified building reflect our dedication to being enviromentally responsible, but it also allows our faculty to engage students in undergraduate research.

Another LEED certified building is under construction at the Red Mountain campus. This Learning Center will support the sciences and arts and expand the campus’ ability to serve students. Provided that construction stays on schedule, it should be open to students this coming fall, 2009.

Recently, our college was awarded the largest portion of a National Science Foundation grant for rock art conservation. This will make possible undergraduate research in collaboration with ASU and the University of Colorado Denver. The nearly $120,000 award, will enable our students to experience field-based research typically reserved for the university level.

This spring, our campus will host the Special Olympics Summer Games for Arizona. This partnership will make available a $10,000 scholarship fund designated for MCC students with disabilities.

While MCC is experiencing many positive opportunities, we like many organizations are facing difficult economic times. As we face these challenges we are determined, to preserve the distinct values which have set MCC apart, such as; fully-dedicated faculty who provide high-quality instruction and who are accessible to you , small class sizes to better serve you, and flexible offerings—including hybrid and online courses to accommodate your schedule – all at a rate that is a fraction of what is charged at universities. We are also continuing to elevate student services to make the process of registration, advisement and transfer more user friendly.

These challenging times also impact our students and their ability to pay for an education. The good news is, that our staff is ready to help you find solutions.  If you are experiencing difficulties in this regard, I encourage you to reach out to our scholarship and financial aid advisors right away.

Our faculty and staff are dedicated to the success of your educational goals. Whether you are a student planning to transfer to a university, preparing to enter the workforce or looking to recareer, we are here to support you.

Thank you for choosing MCC. I wish you the best as you continue forward this semester.
